Chrysalis Studio is dedicated to low-toxicity printmaking: we rely almost entirely on cooking oil and citrus-based cleaners for cleanup, so our daily practices and printmaking classes are solvent-free.

Chrysalis is equipped with a multitude of top-of-the-line polyurethane rollers and brayers ranging from ¼ inch to 16 inches in width.  The studio relies on a beautiful Griffin Series 000 Intaglio Press, hand-built in Oakland.  The usable bed size is 22 ½ by 44 inches, so the press can accommodate a full sheet of standard printmaking paper.  Two grades of paper are available in a variety of colors: our standard “good” printmaking paper is Stonehenge, and our “great” papers are Rives B.F.K. and Pescia.  All are acid-free fine art papers made from 100% cotton, available in all of our printmaking classes.

Chrysalis Studio is generously supported by SOMArts’ Affordable Space Program.  Thank you, SOMArts!

Location

Chrysalis is located in SOMArts, the South of Market Cultural Center, at 934 Brannan (between 8th & 9th).  MAP We are right next door to the building that houses Trader Joe’s, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Nordstrom Rack.  The main entrance is located near the rear of the building, so walk down the long driveway and enter through the yellow double doors for printmaking classes.

Somarts is six (longish) blocks from the Civic Center Bart — a brisk 15-20 minute walk, or you can take the 19 bus, which runs down 7th street and up 9th street.  Parking is on street and generally easy to locate.
